This Week's Program (Aug 12): Congressman Mike Flood

ROOM CHANGE: Please note that tomorrow's meeting will be in the Lancaster Room of the Cornhusker Hotel, which is off located the lobby on the street level floor. Follow the signs or find one of our greeters to help you find your way.

U.S. Congressman Mike Flood was sworn into office on July 12, 2022. Through the years, he has dedicated his life to advancing conservative values, growing Nebraska's rural communities, and creating jobs.

Raised in Norfolk, Mike started working in radio in high school, a passion that continued throughout his time in college at Notre Dame and law school at the University of Nebraska. In 1999, he founded Flood Communications and grew the company from one Norfolk radio station, US92, into a statewide media network. News Channel Nebraska and Flood Communications radio stations deliver content important to rural communities, including local news and weather, high school sports, morning mass, and local entertainment. Mike has created hundreds of Nebraska jobs.

In 2005, Mike was elected to represent his hometown and surrounding Madison County in the Nebraska Legislature. In 2007, his colleagues elected him the youngest Speaker of the Legislature in Nebraska history.

In June 2022, Mike won a special election to take over Nebraska’s 1st District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He currently serves on the Financial Services Committee where he also serves as the Chairman of the Housing and Insurance Subcommittee, a Member of the Financial Institutions Subcommittee, and a Member of the Monetary Policy, Treasury Market Resilience, and Economic Prosperity Task Force. Additionally, he serves as a Member of the House Republican Policy Committee.

Over the years, Mike has given back to Nebraska in numerous ways. He has long been active in Northeast Nebraska economic development and community efforts. Mike served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Children’s Scholarship Fund, advancing its mission to open the doors of educational opportunity for families with financial need. He has also previously served on the Board of Directors for Invest Nebraska, which is committed to growing Nebraska’s economy by assisting entrepreneurs and investing capital in companies with growth potential.

Currently, Mike is a member of the U.S. Strategic Command Consultation Committee and a councillor for the Aksarben Foundation.

Mike and his wife, Mandi, were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in 2003 where they are parishioners. The Floods live in Norfolk, where they are raising their sons Brenden and Blake.

Volunteer for the International Student Picnic
It's been a long-standing tradition for Rotary 14 to host a picnic for collegiate students in our community. This year’s picnic will take place Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 3:00 p.m. at Holmes Lake.

Here you’ll find a list of items we hope to have donated to help make the event a success. Additionally, we’re looking for volunteers to assist with setup or clean up. Or, if you have a spare gift card lying around that you'd like to donate, we’ll take that, too! Every little bit helps.

Our greatest needs include:
  • Cases of Water
  • Use of a Cooler with Ice
  • Desserts (non-meltable)
  • Give away prizes for students (Lincoln swag, gift cards, university clothing, gift baskets etc.)
  • Food (Vegetarian and vegan options)
  • Help with setup from 2:00-2:45 p.m.
  • Help with cleanup from 5-6 p.m.
This year we're providing three options to help make it easier to donate:
  • Deliver items to a Rotary meeting (on or before September 2rd)
  • Deliver to Holmes Lake on the day of the picnic
  • Request a pick up (We will come to you and get the donation. You’ll be contacted after submitting).
This is an event that has welcomed many international students and many look forward to. Be on the lookout for the volunteer registration form in the near future. Contact Kevin Faltin or Jon Gayer with any questions in the meantime.
Pre-Registration for Upcoming Meetings
Due to limited seating and a larger expected attendance, we are asking everyone to pre-register for the following meeting:

September 23
Speaker: Troy Dannen, UNL Athletic Director
Deadline for RSG 2026 Beneficiary Applicants THIS WEEK!

Rotary 14’s Rise.Shine.Give. is a morning celebration and fundraiser that highlights the power of community. We’re seeking a nonprofit partner to be the beneficiary of our 2026 event.

The 2025–26 Rotary International theme, “Unite for Good,” emphasizes the power of collaboration to build stronger, more equitable communities.

The focus for Rise.Shine.Give. this year is to support education-related nonprofits that help address local needs, with special consideration to organizations that have been impacted by reduced government funding. The funds can be used for specific projects or general operating expenses.

If you know of any organization that would be a good fit, please pass the application along to them: Rise.Shine.Give. 2026 Beneficiary Application
