As a Paul Harris Fellow +4, Eric has shown his dedication to the ideals of Rotary and the importance of giving back.
Eric's leadership within our club is commendable. He has held various roles, including Club Secretary, board member, President-Elect, and President of our club during the challenging year of 2020-2021. His guidance and vision were instrumental in navigating the complexities of the Covid pandemic, ensuring our club continued to thrive and serve the community. Notably, Eric played a pivotal role in updating our club's strategic plan, setting us on a path of success for years to come.
Beyond his official roles, Eric's involvement in numerous committees has been invaluable. From the Meeting Tech Team to the International Student Picnic, from the Rotary Foundation to the Little Free Pantries project, including providing admin support at our weekly meetings, Eric has consistently demonstrated a high level of engagement and dedication. He has also played a crucial role in managing our club's district grants, enhancing our impact on the community.
One remarkable aspect of Eric's contributions is his humility and selflessness. He prefers to work behind the scenes, diligently carrying out tasks without seeking the limelight. However, it is time to shine the light on Eric and acknowledge the significant contributions he has made to Rotary 14. His exemplary service and commitment to the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" deserve recognition and admiration.

Katie King, a fourth-generation Rotarian, has been honored with the prestigious Rookie of the Year Award by Club 14. This award recognizes new members who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and involvement in Rotary activities within their first two years of membership. Katie's remarkable contributions to the club include chairing the Greeter Committee, and ensuring warm welcomes for members and guests at weekly meetings. She also played an active role in the Business Networking Committee and actively participated in the Little Free Pantries initiative, supporting community members facing food insecurity. However, her most outstanding achievement was co-chairing the Rise.Shine.Give. event with Michelle Zlomke. Together, they successfully raised an impressive $38,000 for Club 14 Foundation, presenting a generous check to HopeSpoke to support their vital work in Lincoln and the surrounding areas. Katie's commitment to service and her unwavering dedication to the Rotary's values make her a true exemplar of "Service Above Self," and deserving of this esteemed recognition.

Congratulations to Jonathan Northouse, who was recently named the 2023 Don Miller MathAward. Jonathan Northouse's teaching philosophy has evolved over his 23-year career, during which he has exclusively taught in Title 1 buildings, ranging from grades 2nd through 6th. Two fundamental principles drive his approach to teaching.
Firstly, Jonathan is constantly seeking new strategies and updating existing ones, always looking through different lenses to align with current research in areas such as math, brain development, trauma, poverty, equity, and psychology. He actively engages in ongoing professional development to ensure he implements the best teaching practices. Jonathan firmly believes that the day he loses the desire to learn or improve his methods is the day he should retire. He finds immense joy in learning something new and relishes discussions with students about his newfound knowledge or ideas they bring up. Reflecting on the thoughts and strategies of former students who achieved success, he often names specific strategies after those students, reinforcing the notion that children's ideas are just as valuable as those of adults. By fostering a safe classroom environment that encourages purposeful conversations, Jonathan empowers students to make their own mathematical connections, instilling a sense of confidence and autonomy.
Secondly, building strong relationships is a cornerstone of Jonathan's teaching philosophy. He firmly believes that trust forms the foundation for helping students achieve great things. Many of his students have initially approached math with dread or strong dislike, but through his efforts, their perspectives have shifted to viewing math as approachable and manageable. Jonathan has received numerous emails and phone calls from former students and their parents expressing newfound love for math and pursuing related careers. Even though he may not remember specific instances, the sentiments shared by his former students resonate with his teaching style. Jonathan makes decisions in the classroom based on each student's perception of math, intentionally using words to foster belief in their abilities and acceptance of mistakes. According to him, "Mistakes are what lead us to solutions." Through the power of his relationships, he creates a safety net for students, reducing the pressure of right or wrong answers and opening doors to limitless possibilities. This approach nurtures a growth mindset among his students.
Jonathan Northouse's class motto encapsulates his teaching philosophy: "Experience leads to knowledge, knowledge leads to confidence, and confidence leads to success." He draws inspiration from Andy Bassich's quote, emphasizing the importance of firsthand experiences, continuous learning, and self-belief in achieving success.

Rotary 14 Club Survey The Project Grants Evaluation Committee (PGE) is responsible for effectively focusing the financial and volunteer resources of the club at the local, district, and international levels, to ensure that those resources align with Rotary International and Rotary 14 priorities. Committee guidelines require PGE to survey the Rotary 14 membership every other year to determine our highest priority areas. Those guidelines also ask us to consult annually with Prosper Lincoln for information on community needs, and you will see that noted on the survey. Now we need your input!
