On Tuesday, March 19th, we had the honor of having members of Maury Halstead's family join us for our weekly meeting - Monty & Tish Halstead and Scott Halstead. In Maury's meticulous and generous fashion, he charged his son Monty with following a formula to disperse money towards Rotary 14 Lincoln's mission after his passing. Monty presented our Club's Foundation with a $54,000 donation.
Mike Wortman presented the Halstead family with a certificate that had a painting of the Rotary Pavilion at the Lincoln Sunken Gardens that recognizes the contribution in honor of Maury Halstead towards the Foundation's 5/25 Campaign.
We are so thankful for this contribution and the impact that Maury Halstead had in our Rotary 14 community.
Randy is the Executive Director of Lincoln Parks Foundation (LPF) which is the 501(c)3 fundraising arm of the Lincoln Parks & Recreation Department, managing capital campaigns and endowed funds for Lincoln’s parks and trails. Prior to joining the Foundation Randy worked at the Nebraska State Education Association, the Arbor Day Foundation, and spent 19 years teaching first, second and third grades in Longmont, Colorado and Lincoln, Nebraska. Randy has lived and worked in Lincoln for the past 27 years where he and his wife Tracy raised their four children. He’s an avid baseball fan and aspiring disc golfer and kayak angler.

Community seed exchanges increase biodiversity, support endangered pollinators, and even help fight hunger

What’s in a seed? It may be tiny, but a seed can be a powerful tool, as several Rotary clubs have discovered. They’ve created seed libraries where people can get seeds to plant in their gardens and yards at no cost. Now, those communities are reaping substantial rewards.
What they’ve found is that seed libraries do some of the same things regular libraries do: bring people together and encourage learning. Moreover, they increase local biodiversity, support endangered pollinators, and can even help fight hunger.
“I love the community aspect of the seed library. People come in for seeds, and they end up talking,” says Al Hayden, of the Rotary Club of Peabody, Massachusetts, USA. “It’s also an opportunity to show kids that tomatoes don’t actually show up in a little plastic baggie in the grocery store. Getting and planting seeds is a great family-bonding, screen-free activity.”

R. Gordon R. McInally is president of Rotary International. He was educated at the Royal High School in Edinburgh and at the University of Dundee, where he earned his graduate degree in dental surgery. He operated his own dental practice in Edinburgh until 2016. Gordon was chair of the East of Scotland branch of the British Paedodontic Society and has held various academic positions. He has also served as a presbytery elder, chair of the Queensferry parish congregational board, and commissioner to the general assembly of the Church of Scotland.
