New Book - The People of Lincoln
Aug 23, 2022
What makes a city a community? What makes a place home? When you really want to know the personality or the pull of a place, get to know the people who live there. Randy Bretz has spent more than forty years getting to know the people of Lincoln, Nebraska. When he moved his family to the city in the middle of the plains in 1979, he didn't know that he would fall in love with his new home. He didn't know he would stay because of the welcoming, caring, giving people he encountered. He didn't know that he would begin to collect their stories and one day put some of them together in a book-an ode to the community he now embraces as his own. The People of Lincoln presents sixteen portraits of people who make the city a nice place to live, work and raise a family. They are leaders, entrepreneurs, neighbors, artists, organizers, people who moved away and returned. They are people worth getting to know. |

University of Nebraska
Sep 06, 2022
Ted Carter became the eighth president of the University of Nebraska on Jan. 1, 2020, following a national search by the Board of Regents. As president, Carter leads a four-campus university system that enrolls nearly 52,000 students and employs 16,000 faculty and staff on campuses in Lincoln, Omaha and Kearney, plus academic divisions and research and extension centers across the state. He serves as chief spokesman and chief executive officer for the system, which operates on a $2.8 billion annual budget and includes a flagship Big Ten institution, a world-renowned academic health sciences center, Division I athletics programs, and preeminent institutes focused on water and agriculture, national security and defense, infectious disease and early childhood education. Carter brought with him a distinguished record in education, partnerships and military service, having come to Nebraska from the U.S. Naval Academy, his alma mater, where he served as superintendent. Under his leadership, the Naval Academy achieved a No. 1 national ranking and new records in student success and diversity. Carter previously was president of the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, R.I. A retired Vice Admiral with 38 years of service, Carter has logged more than 6,300 flying hours and holds the American record for carrier-arrested landings. In his first year at the University of Nebraska – faced with the unexpected and unprecedented challenges presented by COVID-19 – Carter led with a focus on the land-grant priorities of access and opportunity for students and families. He launched the Nebraska Promise, a financial aid program guaranteeing free tuition for low- and middle-income Nebraskans, and implemented a multi-year budget plan that included a two-year, across-the-board tuition freeze. The result was system-wide growth in enrollment, including record gains among underrepresented students. Carter oversaw the awarding of a $92 million federal contract for the university’s National Strategic Research Institute, one of only 14 University-Affiliated Research Centers in the country conducting exclusive research for the Department of Defense. During Carter’s tenure, the NU system has been ranked among the world’s top 100 institutions for earning research patents, the Omaha campus was selected as the home for a new federal counterterrorism research center, the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources launched a new effort focused on rural vitality, and the medical center opened an education, training and preparedness facility that positions Nebraska as the world leader in the fight against infectious disease. Carter holds a courtesy faculty appointment in aviation in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He serves as the chair of the Daugherty Water for Food Global Institute’s Board of Directors and is a board member for the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Naval Historical Foundation and the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. Carter is also a member of the Aspen Institute’s Higher Education Working Group, the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities’ Council of Presidents and the Council on Competitiveness' University Leadership Forum. He is an ex-officio member on the board of the University of Nebraska Foundation, the philanthropic partner of the university system that has a $1.7 billion endowment. Carter earned his bachelor’s degree in physics and oceanography from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he played hockey and served as team captain. He is a graduate of the Navy Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun) and holds educational credentials from the Navy Nuclear Power School, the U.S. Air Force Air War College, the Naval War College and the Armed Forces Staff College. Carter’s military career includes service for the Carrier Strike Group Twelve, in which he commanded 20 ships, two nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and two carrier wings that were deployed to Afghanistan and the Arabian Gulf. The son of an English teacher, Carter was raised in the rural, one-high school town of Burrillville, R.I. He and his wife, Lynda, live in Lincoln and have two adult children, Brittany and Christopher. |

HopeSpoke For our first 70 years, we were known as the Child Guidance Center. In 2018, we became HopeSpoke, a brand that carries forward our legacy and mission - to inspire healthy futures for children and their families through comprehensive behavioral and mental health services. Back in 1949, our organization was formed to meet the community’s needs after the Child Guidance national movement identified how treatment for children's mental health services needed to be different from that of adults. Under the vision of the Junior League of Lincoln and the Community Chest (the precursor to United Way), the Child Guidance Center was formed. The philosophy of our team is to understand the unique qualities and experiences of those we serve as influenced by emotional and cognitive development, family situation, social environment and personality. Then through dynamic, interactive therapy, we work to examine problems while building on strengths. In a nutshell, our founders had a big vision - for all children and families to be healthy and hopeful. And together with strong affiliations, we've been moving forward and making it happen ever since! Universal Pure Founded in 2001 as a cold storage warehouse facility in Lincoln, Universal Pure has deep roots in the cold supply chain. We are a one-stop-shop service provider to the food and beverage industry, offering a suite of cold chain solutions at eight U.S. facilities across seven locations. We are dedicated to giving people and families everywhere safe, fresh, and delicious food to eat and drink. The way we see it, our work is bigger than a process or procedure because what we do affects families. Rotarians who attend the Business Networking Day event hosted by Universal Pure will learn more about how we help our partners achieve these goals and will have the opportunity to tour our local facility. |

ECHO Collective
Jan 10, 2023
Kelly Ross is from Lincoln, Nebraska, and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in Spanish. Since college, she has been working with refugees and immigrants in a variety of ways, as a caseworker, paralegal, citizenship instructor, and ESL instructor. Through her work, she has developed a passion for those new to the United States and insight into the unique barriers they face. In 2020, Kelly founded ECHO Collective as a way to empower New American women to achieve their entrepreneurial and artisanal dreams. After claiming to be a “cat person” for years, Kelly finds herself with two dogs that bring her so much joy. She also loves to read and watch trivia shows her with husband. |

"A Pandemic's Impact on Classroom Volunteering"
Jan 17, 2023
“A Pandemic’s Impact on Classroom Volunteering” Junior Achievement of Lincoln reached its 50th anniversary of continued growth in our community in 2021. Yes, the year of hybrid learning when dedicated JA volunteers Zoom-ed into classrooms to talk about real-life experiences related to financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and workforce readiness skills. Currently, JA reaches over 30,000 K-12 students annually in more than 1,400 classrooms thanks to 1,000+ volunteers including Rotarian Randy Bretz, who will immerse you in a first grade classroom and share his volunteer experience before introducing JA’s Vice President, Toni Rupe. Tuesday’s presentation will be a surprising look into JA’s long-term partnership with Lincoln’s private and public schools and the not-so-surprising impact a pandemic had on volunteer involvement at a time when the need for adult mentors and role models could not be any greater for our youth. |
