Harold W. (Andy) Andersen To Be Honored as Nebraskan of the Year

Harold W. (Andy) Andersen, retired Omaha World-Herald CEO & Publisher and life-long philanthropist, will be honored as Rotary’s 2012 Nebraskan of the Year. A luncheon in his honor will be held on January 17th at Lincoln’s Embassy Suites Hotel, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis for $25. The Nebraskan of the Year award honors and recognizes the accomplishments of a Nebraskan who has distinguished himself or herself through service to others in keeping with the ideals of Rotary International.
Mr. Andersen was born in Omaha, graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1945, and began his newspaper career with the Lincoln Star newspaper. In 1946, he started his career with the World-Herald, serving as World-Herald State Capital correspondent in Lincoln until 1958, when he returned to Omaha to become the assistant to the managing editor. Mr. Andersen served as one of the driving forces behind this award winning newspapers’ expansion and growth. He served in many management positions throughout his career, including serving as CEO and Publisher from 1986 until his retirement in 1989.
Mr. Andersen and his wife of 59 years, Marian, have been involved throughout their lives in projects, programs, and organizations throughout the state. Their benevolence has ensured that those less fortunate have had a better quality of life. They have supported educational institutions, including Andy’s alma mater, Omaha North High School, the University of Nebraska, Bellevue College, and schools throughout Nebraska. Mr. & Mrs. Andersen have both volunteered generously of their time, serving on many boards throughout Nebraska, including Junior Achievement, Nebraska Game and Parks, Omaha Zoo, and the Nature Conservancy. Mr. Andersen has also served on many boards throughout the nation, including the Federal Reserve Bank. He was also very active in organizations that supported the world of journalism, receiving many honors for his life-long efforts.
